I tend to shy away from wines priced under $10. Not because I’m a wine snob, but because, well, why would I pay anything for something I dislike drinking? Which is typically the case for wines priced that low.
But if you search hard enough, there are some perfectly acceptable offerings out there. For the next week or so, I’m going to suggest a few. And it starts here.
Negrar Garetta Rosso 2018 — Veneto, Italy ($8.30)
Here’s a good one to blind taste with friends. While you might recognize the Negrar brand for its well-priced Amarone, this value-priced entry-level red might impress. It’s primarily Corvina (85%)—typically used as one of the classic three blending grapes in the Valpolicella region. Even the new label impresses, highlighted by a coat of arms and stylized “N” for Negrar. Brief steel aging has preserved the dark red fruit, which finishes with a spicy note. It’s easy on the tannins, with the light to medium body and acidity of a Gamay Noir. Serve slightly chilled with pizza or even salmon. 87
