When Aurelio Montes Jr., son of one of South America’s most celebrated winemakers, Aurelio Montes Sr., decided to venture out on his own in winemaking, he wanted to pursue Cabernet Franc as a standalone varietal. His father, the co-founder of Chile’s Montes Wines, thought that was a bad idea—that Cab Franc was well suited in a red wine blend, but not so much on its own. So what happened when Aurelio Jr., the winemaker of Montes’ Kaiken Winery in Argentina, ignored the advice of his father? Aurelio Sr. told me the story during a trade event at Toronto’s Modus Ristorante earlier this year. We also sampled one of his own iconic creations, Purple Angel Carmenere 2015, and got the story behind its unique name.
